Glovo, the pioneering multi-category app, and the County of Nairobi signed a Framework of Understanding (MOU) to empower small businesses. Glovo is committing to empowering local businesses and enhancing social guarantees and couriers’ safety. In partnership with the County of Nairobi, the company pledges to support the growth and development of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the county, and actively promote the achievement of the county’s sustainability goals.
The MOU was signed between H.E. Sakaja Arthur Johnson, The Governor of Nairobi City County, and Caroline Mutuku (CM), General Manager of Glovo Kenya at Glovo. This was in the presence of Ambassador Cristina Diaz, Spanish Ambassador, William Benthall, and Global Director Government Relations at Glovo.
“We are proud to partner with the County of Nairobi to support local businesses and further enhance the benefits and safety of couriers in the region – matters that have always been a key priority for Glovo,” says Caroline Mutuku, General Manager of Glovo Kenya. “Together, we can create a brighter future for the community and bring dignity to the courier service.”
H.E. Sakaja Arthur Johnson, The Governor of Nairobi City County, adds: “We have a meeting of minds with Glovo and the Spanish Ambassador on the need for dignified and safe work. This partnership will deliver safety training and e-learning to up to 1,500 Glovo riders”. The Governor also added “Most SMEs do not last beyond 3 years due to limited access to basic business training such as financial planning, bookkeeping, and growth, and it is great that Glovo is looking to close this gap through training which will ensure that SMEs succeed in the digital economy”.
The Spanish Ambassador, Critina Diaz, witnessed the signing of the Framework of Understanding and said: “I very much welcome the partnership between Glovo and Nairobi City County, and the work they are doing to connect the digital economy to the informal sector as well as SMES. I am very happy that Spain is extending business and impact to Nairobi and Africa”.

Support for SMEs
As part of its commitment to the Kenyan SMEs community, Glovo is providing tools and solutions to help businesses in Nairobi reach more customers, allowing businesses to digitise their operations and to manage more efficiently. Glovo will also support the implementation of digital transformation programs and provide training sessions and development tools to help SMEs grow. Additionally, Glovo will help SMEs access financial services and funding to support their growth.
Enhancing social rights for the couriers’ community
For the couriers’ community, Glovo will continue to implement The Courier’s Pledge, a commitment by the company to increase the social rights and benefits available to couriers, regardless of employment or work status with the company. Within the commitment, Glovo organises voluntary safety sessions for couriers and provides access to training courses to help couriers develop professional skills.
Glovo is also committed to promoting the county’s sustainable development goals in the delivery sector, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting environmentally friendly packaging.
The Memorandum of Understanding builds on Glovo’s recent announcement of Glovo Local, a toolkit for small & medium restaurants & retail stores to help them digitize their business while growing their online channels.
