Redmi A1 Plus Review : Budget Phone with Incredible Specs

Xiaomi has been recently unveiling different smartphone devices in the market that are not only pocket friendly but also have some of the best specifications for the changing consumer needs. It is to that effect that the company recently unleashed their budget smartphone, Redmi A1 Plus in the Kenyan market. This is after the launch of other great smartphones including Redmi Note 11 Pro mid this year.

Straight out the box, the Redmi A1 Plus is a light phone which looks and feels premium compared to devices on this price point. The phone comes with an adapter, a USB cable, a sim eject tool, warranty card and manual. Unfortunately, it doesn’t come with the detachable back cover.

I have with me the unit in black color. Other variants come in Light Blue and Light Green colors.

Redmi A1 Plus

Just in summary, the Redmi A1 Plus dons a 6.52-inch LCD display with 720 p resolution and 0 Hz, a 5000 mAh battery, Mediatek Helio A22 processor with 2 GB RAM and 32 GB ROM, and an 8 MP dual AI camera + 5 MP front camera.

The phone also runs on Android Go 12 because of its rather low storage and RAM. Unlike the other Redmi phones that use the type C charging system, the Redmi A1 Plus uses old micro-USB port that supports 10 W charging.

Performance

Redmi A1 Plus runs on the Android v12 operating system with MIUI 12 skin on top. The phone is driven by MediaTek Helio A22 processor. It has a RAM of 2GB which is quite low but a normal feature with budget smartphones. It features a fingerprint scanner at the back as well.

I didn’t encounter any lags while using the phone and the touch was very smooth and responsive. I guess because I also installed the lite version of the apps.

Redmi A1 Plus Camera

Being a budget phone, I expected the camera to be also very average but I was surprised at how good the camera was. The phone sports a dual-AI rear camera with an LED flash, it consists of an 8MP primary camera with an aperture of f/2.2 and a 0.3MP secondary AI camera with autofocus. Aside from that, users can record FHD 1080p videos @30fps using the main rear camera. Besides, the phone carries a 5MP front camera for assisting selfies and video chats.

Check out some of the photos I took using both the selfie and back camera. Note that, the photos were taken during the day under optimum light conditions.

Redmi A1 Plus Battery

The phone comes with a 5000mAh battery that is sure to last for quite some time depending on your usage. I put the phone to test and it lasted past a day with normal usage including switching between social media apps and playing sudoku and Talking Tom games.

The problem is with the charging as it takes quite some time to fill up due to the micro – USB charging system. It took about 3 hours to get to full charge which was honestly upsetting.

Redmi A1 Plus Storage

The phone comes with 32GB of internal storage space but you can expand it through the micro SD card slot if you need more storage.

Verdict?

Looking at the price point and specifications for the Redmi A1 Plus, I think it’s a great buy. It has not compromised on the looks and has the basic features for any good smartphone. Plus, it comes with two nano-SIM slots and the memory capacity can be expanded through the SD slot if the 32GB is not enough for you.

Unfortunately, charging relies on the micro-USB charger which takes longer to get to full capacity compared with the type C charging that is usually faster. And since majority of the current smartphones are using type-C, you might need to have your charger anytime you are travelling.

If you are on the market looking for a budget smartphone for around KES 10,000, then this would be a great option. You can find one in any Xiaomi Stores, online platforms like Jumia and partner stores across the country.
